The Miss Hong Kong (港小姐競選) pageant is seemingly besieged by bad luck this year. After 11th participant Jennifer Zhou (周婷) announced her withdrawal, Lynn Wang (王怡然) was also suspected following in her footsteps!
Several contestants had already declared their withdrawal from Miss Hong Kong prior to them announcing their selected finalists. As such, netizens were quick to assume 4th contestant Lynn Wang was joining the list when she missed an appearance for an event, but TVB has since explained why.
The 21-year-old has been a fan-favourite thanks to her good looks which earned her the nickname “Cute version of Charlene Choi (阿Sa)”. A few Malaysians even claimed she resembled local internet celebrity MsPuiyi. So, it was no surprise when fans noted her glaring absence during a publicised Miss Hong Kong event.
Rumours of her alleged withdrawal first started on 24th July after TVB’s official Weibo announced that the candidates had attended a public event in China. Photos of the candidates were uploaded but one candidate in particular was missing; Lynn Wang. Netizens were left wondering at the change in number of finalists, as previously 16 candidates were declared as finalists.
On 27th July, TVB issued an official statement to clarify the issue and to reassure fans. “The contestants of Miss Hong Kong 2023 were invited to Guangzhou to shoot a promotional video for China. The No. 4 contestant, Lynn Wang, was unable to go with the (others) due to an illness, and the conference accepted the reason for her leave,” they stated. TVB added that the filming was not part of Miss Hong Kong 2023.
Well, we’re certainly happy to hear that Lynn Wang is dedicated to finishing her journey with Miss Hong Kong 2023. We, like the rest of their fans, look forward to seeing all 16 finalists on stage, ready to claim the title of Miss Hong Kong this year!
