Prison is not a place you’ll want to be in, and we’ve heard plenty of stories from those who’ve been in prison – even celebrities and public figures. After spending 18 days in jail for a DUI charge, TVB actor Mat Yeung (楊明) became a free man earlier this year and started acting again. However, life hasn’t been easy for him since his release.
In a recent interview, the actor reflects on his life after he was released from prison. For context, the 42-year-old was guilty of drinking under the influence and was sentenced to 18 days in jail. After his release in January of this year, the actor began working and appearing in TVB dramas, including the recent “Night Beauties”.
Despite that, the actor says that he still receives negative comments and verbal attacks online and in public. He also revealed that a random stranger once called him a ‘prisoner’ on the street. However, the TVB actor said he’s not angered by the comments, calling them his ‘punishment’. He added that he can’t control what others say, so he wants to move on to better things in the future.
He also shared what prison life was like for him, saying that the first two days were the hardest. The actor said he couldn’t get used to the uncomfortable environment and even had trouble sleeping because his cell lights stayed on 24 hours a day.
The actor then talked about the support he received from his family and his Malaysian girlfriend, actress Lisa Ch’ng (莊思明). He thanked them for their unconditional support and even spoke about his relationship with Lisa, his co-star in “Night Beauties”.
When asked if he had ever planned to break up with her after his imprisonment, the actor replied that he will never break up with her. He shared that the actress has always supported him and even helped to fend off the media and hate comments from the public. He then added, “I will look after her for as long as I live. Things would’ve been a lot harder without her.”
We’re glad the actor tries to face life more positively and we hope to see him in more TVB dramas soon.
