Yung Gravy and bbno$ (baby no money) joined forces in 2017 – but back then, no one expected what they could do and what would become of them. Fast-forward to 2023, their duo act, Baby Gravy, has sold out over 100,000 tickets to their 2022 tour, amassed millions of listens on their tracks and is about to release the third instalment of their musical project this August.

The two first met as Soundcloud artists but have since grown to become two of the biggest rappers in today’s music. They are no strangers to charming listeners with their effortless flows and quotable lyrics – and it looks like their upcoming “Baby Gravy 3” release will be another opportunity for fans to enjoy the ear candy of Baby Gravy. We managed to hop into a Zoom call with the duo to hear what they say about their new music – so keep scrolling to read more:

    Q. How did you two meet and how did you come up with the Baby Gravy collaboration?

Yung Gravy: We met 7 years ago, through Soundcloud and DMs. I remember when I first got a DM from him (bbno$), I had about 200 followers – maybe 100 – and he had 300. This was on Soundcloud, which is like, basically, if you opened a Soundcloud and you have Facebook friends, you can get that many followers. So, it was very early but we became friends and started working together via Facebook messages – and that’s where we kicked off.

    Q. You guys released “You Need Jesus” and “Goodness Gracious” as the first two singles for the album. What were the inspirations behind the music videos?

Yung Gravy: For the “You Need Jesus” music video, basically, we told the folks that we’re filming with that we wanted to make an epic, end-of-the-world video and they kinda handled it from there.

bbno$: (For) “Goodness Gracious”, it was, “Let’s go to a cool place”, a.k.a Hawaii.

Yung Gravy: Yeah, I had a show in Hawaii and I was like, “Let me bring Alex (bbno$) out here and let’s just pretend we’re in “Cast Away”.”

bbno$: Yeah, and the director was like, “Let’s just do a “Cast Away” that don’t make any sense.”

    Q. Since you both had viral hits, how do you feel about teaming up again? Was there any pressure because people might expect another viral hit from you two?

Yung Gravy: No, It’s just (about having) fun.

bbno$: At the end of the day, nothing matters.

Yung Gravy: I mean, we’ve toured together. People loved it and it was amazing. When we work together, it’s for them, it’s not for us.

    Q. Does your upcoming album have a deep meaning? Is it a “straight-from-a-conscious-stream-of-thought” type of album?

    Yung Gravy: No.

bbno$: We don’t have many thoughts so there’s no stream of anything.

Yung Gravy: We just rapped and have fun with each other. It’s not like we’re in there (the studio) thinking about something deep, we’re just having a good time.

bbno$: I mean, today, we’re definitely thinking about deep things.

Yung Gravy: Yeah, we definitely think about deep things but when we’re in the studio, we’re having a good time.

    Q. Do you have any favourite tracks from your upcoming album?

Yung Gravy: My favourite track is “Nightmare of Peachtree Street”.

bbno$: I like “Super Smash Bros”, I like “Onomotapeioa”. I really like “C’est La Vie”.

Yung Gravy: “C’est La Vie” is amazing. I’d say “Nightmare of Peachtree Street” and “Super Smash Bros” are my favourites.

    Q. Looking back on your career so far, how has your artistry evolved over the years – comparing this album with the previous ones?

Yung Gravy: Personally, I learned how to make music. I started as a business (major) boy who liked rap and I would rap over beats. And now, I actually know how to make music and I work in a studio. So yeah, I’m a rapper (now), I suppose.

bbno$: The answer to the question depends on how many years. I have no idea if my music has even gotten worse in a sense because it’s all subjective. But clearly, people like some of our music and some of the music does pretty well so, god bless. The current album sounds – like the music sound tighter, but I don’t know if people would enjoy it as much as the older music.

Yung Gravy: They will! I think our new album is the best by a mile.

bbno$: It’s definitely the best work we’ve made together.

Yung Gravy: I think it’s probably the best work we’ve done. Not only are the lyrics better, not only is the production better but it is a, through and through, project. There is not a miss in the whole album. I think it’s beautiful.

    Q. Do you have any goals you want to achieve after the album? Like being awarded a Grammy or going on a worldwide tour?

Yung Gravy: I don’t really personally care about that. I like making money and being happy and doing what I love. Worldwide tours have happened already for both of us, I supposed. For Grammys, I just feel like it doesn’t mean anything to me. I don’t really make “Grammy music”.

bbno$: My goal is just to know what I’m doing every single day for the rest of my life and just to be happy.

    Q. Would you guys be down to do a show in Southeast Asia?

bbno$: I would love to do a show in Southeast Asia. That would be fantastic.

Yung Gravy: I would absolutely love to do (a show). He (bbno$) has a lot of fans in a lot of parts of Asia. For me, if I were to tour Asia, that would be the first stop. Hopefully soon.
