Hong Kong diva Coco Lee (李玟) left her family, friends and fans behind last week when the singer allegedly took her own life. However, since her passing, many have been in a tizzy over her poor marriage with Canadian businessman Bruce Rockowitz and her inheritance.
But, it seems the late 48-year-old had always struggled with romantic relationships. Recently, an exclusive interview featuring Coco from 1996 was dug up and in it, she admitted that love seemed elusive to her. Needless to say, netizens were surprised by how little had changed for Coco Lee, yet how different the singer had been.
The video showed Coco Lee talking to the interviewer in a sleeveless blue dress and looking very cheery. Netizens were amazed to see how young she looked, helped by her high ponytail and wide smile. Coco initially spoke about her favourite ice cream store, even sharing that she had once gained weight from eating so much of the treat before losing it for beauty pageants in the US.
However, what caught people’s interest was when the interviewer asked her about relationships. Coco shared that she found affection from family to be the most important thing in her life while friendship was indispensable as friends accompanied her through her highs and lows. But love turned out to be a mystery for our then-young singer.
“Why are there times when feeling loved makes you so happy, but when you quarrel with people and are unhappy, you really feel as though you want to shrink and disappear? So, should there be love? Or shouldn’t it be?” Coco reportedly wondered. She also added that, at the time, she preferred boys who were upright, career-minded, and self-motivated to handsome ones. They also had to be someone her mother approved of at first glance.
Netizens commented on Coco Lee’s earlier demeanour, praising her for being “lively and cute“. However, one comment pointed out that she had already predicted her future. “After a lover’s quarrel, (she felt) like shrinking and disappearing,” they said.
Many are still mourning the loss of Coco Lee, while her family and Bruce Rockowitz have been contesting her will. Regardless, we hope Coco finds peace in her afterlife. Watch the interview here:
