The use of e-hailing in Malaysia is well-established, with the majority of Malaysians either lacking access to a vehicle or unwilling to sit through daily traffic jams (we’re talking to you, KL/Selangor residents). Most of us are already familiar with the services available to us, like Grab and AirAsia. But it seems like there might be a +1 to our e-hailing services.
A Honda City with a ‘Gojek’ logo on the side of the car was recently spotted recording at the Kuala Lumpur Airport area, one of KL’s hotspots. While many are anticipating Gojek’s arrival in Malaysia, others are considering the idea that ‘Gojek’ has simply chosen Malaysia as the place for filming their social media content.
For those who are unfamiliar with Gojek, it is a multi-service tech platform that offers access to a variety of services such as transportation, payments, food delivery, logistics, and more. This Indonesian company is well-known for providing motorbike driving services. However, it now offers a car-driving service; GoCar which is similar to Grab, the country’s e-hailing industry’s pioneer.
A black Honda City with the ‘Gojek’ branding on its side was photographed late Sunday evening. It was being shot with a video camera in front of it, as seen in the image below. During the filming, there was also a traffic police man guarding the automobile and directing traffic.
Could this be a hint that Gojek is preparing to bring their e-hailing services to Malaysia and compete with the existing services? Or was this just a photo session for their social media feed that we were kepo enough to catch wind of?
We’ll just have to keep an eye on things to see what’s really going on. Perhaps we’ll see more of this black Honda City ‘Gojek’ Car in the coming days.
