Travelling to a different country means you get to discover new, amazing, and unusual things. No amount of research can ever prepare you for what you’re about to experience and that’s part of the fun. Apart from cultural practices, we’ve had foreigners being mind-blown by the things we usually take for granted.

For instance, an Indonesian TikToker was amazed to see so many Sedan cars in Malaysia. Prior to that, a French tourist claimed that one of our islands is far more beautiful than the Maldives. But have you ever wondered what surprise foreigners when they visit Malaysia? This British traveller is listing down three:

British content creator @howyseesstuff regularly posts videos of his travels around the world on TikTok. Scrolling through his channel, we can see that he and his partner have been in Malaysia since December 2022. One of his videos is currently going viral, now reaching over 210k views, and 12.1k likes. The video was of him visiting Sunway Velocity Mall.

In the video, the traveller listed down three things he felt “weird” when visiting the local mall in Cheras. Apparently, the first thing was a McDonald’s Ice-Cream kiosk. We grew up seeing these kiosks in every mall or hypermarket but apparently, they do not exist in the UK. The second thing the British man was taken aback by was a children’s train ride in the mall. While we can’t verify if this is a norm in the UK, we can at least confirm from the video that it was definitely a rare sight for the TikToker.

Lastly, the thing that the tourist was excited to see in a Malaysian mall was Toys “R” Us. Why? For those who may not know, Toys “R” Us used to be big in both the UK and the US. Unfortunately, the toy brand giant filed for bankruptcy in 2017, closing all of its US, British, and Australian locations, with the last store in the US closing in 2021. Needless to say, the British traveller was stoked to see this nostalgia in person.

Speaking of rare sights, another foreigner had her mind blown after seeing the Chinese New Year decorations at Suria KLCC. According to @nicolecrewe, she had never seen anything like this in her life. “A shopping centre putting so much effort [into] a festival? They built all this in the middle of the shopping centre!” she said while showing the beautiful decorations to her followers.

Guess we really do take these things for granted. Perhaps we should take time to appreciate and celebrate our local attractions and shops.
