After a long stressful week or month of work, who wouldn’t want to go on a well-deserved holiday? When it comes to popular holiday destinations in Malaysia, Langkawi would be one of the first to come to mind. The tropical archipelago has a lot to offer to tourists from both Malaysia and abroad.

Many prefer to enjoy their holiday peacefully where there aren’t too many people around but what does it mean when said popular holiday destination isn’t as lively as expected? How would you react if you visited Langkawi and discovered that it has been really, really quiet lately?

TikTok user @Khair.review posted a video recently that’s been getting a lot of attention from netizens all over social media. The video, which has gained over 368k views, showed Pantai Cenang, a popular location in Langkawi that is often filled with people, especially on weekends. However, it now looks somewhat deserted as the number of tourists seemed to have decreased.

In the video, we can hear the professional emcee wondering about the current state of Langkawi as there were not as many people as before even on a Saturday evening. “There are so few people here. Has everyone gone to Thailand?” he questioned. He then proceeded to show the viewers the rest of Pantai Cenang and its night market where there seems to be little to no tourists in sight.

Netizens reacted to the video with many agreeing that people may prefer to go to Thailand as the cost of a holiday there is much cheaper compared to Langkawi. Apparently, the cost of food and accommodation in the archipelago are no longer affordable, making Langkawi a less-preferred option for a holiday.

Meanwhile, entry into Thailand showed positive development after the borders were opened last month. In the video above, it apparently showed Malaysians queuing for hours to travel to the neighbouring country. Now that international travelling are opening up, more and more Malaysians are opting to travel abroad rather than locally.

In the meantime, let’s just hope that the cost to travel in our home country would improve so that holiday destination such as Langkawi can pick up their pace once more.
