In Sengerema district, located in Mwanza region on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, at least 19 people have tragically lost their lives to crocodile attacks over the past five years, with an additional 20 individuals suffering the loss of limbs as a result, according to Paul Poncian, the district’s wildlife official.
The incidents of limb loss occurred between January 2019 and December 2023, with a majority of the victims being fishermen who fell prey to the crocodiles in the lake.
Additionally, swimmers and individuals collecting water from Lake Victoria, which is not only the largest lake in Africa but also the primary reservoir of the Nile River, were also among the victims of these attacks.
To address this pressing issue, Lolruck Mosses, a senior official with the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), has announced the launch of a campaign focused on raising awareness among residents living in close proximity to the lake in order to prevent future crocodile attacks.
