The Harvard Corporation has officially confirmed that Harvard President Claudine Gay has resigned from her position, citing “overarching consideration” as the reason for her departure. This news comes after a series of unprecedented challenges faced by Harvard and higher education in recent months, according to a statement released by the Harvard Corporation on Tuesday.

President Gay also shared her sentiments about her resignation, expressing her deep love for Harvard and the difficult decision she had to make. She acknowledged the challenges faced by the institution and emphasized that her resignation is in the best interests of Harvard and its community during this difficult time.

Gay’s resignation marks the end of her brief six-month tenure as Harvard’s president, making it the shortest presidency in the university’s history. She has faced intense pressure due to her congressional testimony on antisemitism on campus and allegations of improper citation in her academic papers.

The Harvard Corporation expressed its commitment to upholding the institution’s mission of academic excellence and the importance of unity in the face of ongoing strife and division. They also announced that Alan Garber, the university’s provost and chief academic officer, will serve as interim president until a new leader is appointed.

As part of her resignation, Gay will return to the Harvard faculty, where she has been a professor of government since 2006. The university’s focus now shifts to identifying and appointing a new president who can guide Harvard through this challenging period.
