ATHENS, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) — According to the country’s national news agency AMNA, Greece was hit by a storm which resulted in three deaths and three missing individuals.
The storm, named “Daniel” by Greek meteorologists, has brought heavy rainfall across the country since Monday, causing extensive flooding in central Greece on Tuesday and Wednesday and leading to the evacuation of settlements.
Firefighters recovered the bodies of an 87-year-old woman and an 82-year-old man in central Greece near the cities of Volos and Larissa respectively on Wednesday. Additionally, a shepherd lost his life near Volos on Tuesday.
AMNA reported that three men were reported missing on Tuesday and Wednesday in the same region.
Hundreds of homes and businesses have been affected, and farmers and stockbreeders have reported damages. Parts of the national highway connecting Athens to Thessaloniki port city in the north have also experienced interruption in traffic.
In the past 48 hours, the Fire Brigade received 2,421 telephone calls seeking assistance with evacuations, water pumping, and tree removal mainly in the Thessaly region.
Even the Greek capital witnessed heavy downpour on Wednesday, resulting in temporary rivers forming on main avenues and roads.
Greek authorities have issued multiple alerts cautioning citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution. The bad weather front is expected to subside on Thursday evening.
