SIBU: Most blood donors in Sarawak are those aged 30 and above, says Sibu Hospital deputy director Dr Nizam Ishak.

In Sibu alone, he said there are more than 80% regular blood donors compared to 65% in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Sibu recorded 86.5% of regular donors last year (2023) while in 2022 we will reach 83.7%.

“However, we still need blood donors. We advise these donors to always maintain a healthy lifestyle,” he said at the sidelines of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society Sibu branch World Blood Donor Day on Sunday (June 9).

Dr Nizam said people in this state from various ethnicities and backgrounds have many blood donors with special blood types that can help treat diseases.

Following that, he hoped that more blood haematologists would be sent to serve in Sarawak.

According to him, with more such specialists serving in Sarawak they can screen and identify blood donors.

In addition, he also said, these experts can optimise the use of donor blood to treat diseases not only in this country but also in other countries.

“Currently there are five such experts in Sarawak where two are in Kuching and one each in Sibu, Bintulu and Miri,” he said.
