TORONTO (Reuters) – Lisa Pauli, a 47-year-old, has battled anorexia since childhood. She weighs 92 pounds and struggles to eat. Starting in March 2024, new criteria will allow Canadians like Pauli, who have a mental illness as their sole condition, to choose medically assisted death. Canada will become one of the world’s most permissive countries when it comes to medical assistance in dying (MAID). However, disability rights and religious advocates argue that the changes may lead to people seeking MAID because they cannot access necessary social services.
