PETALING JAYA: Bersatu has raised concerns over the corruption charges against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is accused of misappropriating RM31mil from his charitable foundation Yayasan Akalbudi (YAB), and whether these charges will be dropped. Sasha Lyna Abdul Latif, the Deputy Chairman of Bersatu’s Legal and Constitution Bureau, has called on Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to clarify the stance of his office in regards to this matter, amidst growing public worry that the charges against Ahmad Zahid may be dropped.
Sasha Lyna added that it is particularly alarming since the relentless Datuk Raja Rozela Raja Toran was removed as the lead prosecutor for this case. She insisted that it is high time for the Attorney General to stop evading the issue around Ahmad Zahid’s corruption case and make a clear statement regarding the possibility of dropping the charges. She emphasized that such a statement is crucial for the public interest and to maintain investor confidence, eradicating any doubts surrounding the status of this case.
The Attorney General’s Chambers released a statement on Wednesday (Aug 16), asserting that there has been no political interference or pressure in initiating any prosecutions. Idrus reiterated that each decision to prosecute is made independently and professionally by considering all relevant evidence presented by law enforcement agencies, in accordance with the applicable laws.
The statement was issued in response to the call made by Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, urging the Attorney General’s Chambers to re-evaluate all court charges against Bersatu and Perikatan leaders.
Sasha Lyna highlighted that back in April, the Attorney General’s Chambers granted a significant court adjournment to deliberate on the representations made by Ahmad Zahid, requesting for the charges to be dropped. She pointed out that the trial only resumed in August, with the lead Deputy Public Prosecutor stating that the representations are still under consideration. Sasha Lyna questioned why the Attorney General has yet to make a decision after more than four months have passed since the representations were made.
Idrus had previously clarified that the decision to replace Raja Rozela was made following her request for early retirement.
