According to Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim) has been instructed to develop high-powered water pumps in order to address flood issues.
The Deputy Prime Minister stated that having a locally-made pump to remove stagnant flood waters would eliminate the need for imports.
He mentioned that the water pumps he had approved during his visit to the flood-hit locations in Kota Tinggi, Segamat and Batu Pahat last year have not been received yet due to the procurement processes. For this reason, he has tasked Sirim with producing its own high-powered water pumps.
He also stated that once the water pumps are ready, the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) can purchase them directly from Sirim.
Ahmad Zahid also confirmed that Sirim had developed its own water filter system to provide fresh water to flood victims and areas with disrupted water supply.
He also witnessed the handing over of three water filter units to the Civil Defence Force and revealed that he has asked Nadma to order 20 units of the water filters to have on standby for future uses.
