A prominent researcher in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is bidding farewell to Google to embark on a new entrepreneurial journey. Llion Jones, co-author of the influential AI paper “Attention Is All You Need,” is set to leave his position at Google Japan later this month to establish his own startup. He expressed his excitement about starting a new venture, stating that the remarkable progress and momentum in AI make it an opportune time to build something innovative. Jones conveyed his gratitude towards Google for the incredible decade of collaboration. A spokesperson for Google has yet to comment on Jones’ departure.
Published in 2017, the groundbreaking paper “Attention Is All You Need” has made waves in the tech industry, particularly in Silicon Valley. The paper introduced transformers as a concept, which are systems designed to guide AI models in identifying essential information within data analysis. Transformers have now become vital components in developing large language models, the backbone of popular AI products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Over the years, several authors of “Attention Is All You Need” have taken the entrepreneurial path by launching notable startups. For instance, Cohere offers large language models to corporate clients, while Character.AI enables users to create chatbots resembling celebrities and historical figures. With Jones’ impending departure, all eight authors have now parted ways with Google, marking a significant transition for the team. – Bloomberg
