SIBU: AirAsia has extended its Singapore-Sibu-Singapore route until March 2024. The service, which operates four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday, was initially scheduled to end on October 27. However, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng urged the airlines and Sarawak Transport Ministry to make the route permanent rather than on a block basis. Chieng argued that having a permanent flight schedule would allow travelers, including businessmen, entrepreneurs, and members of non-governmental organizations, to plan their activities more effectively. He also highlighted that a permanent flight service would attract more international visitors to the central region of Sarawak.
Chieng expressed his support for the route extension during a press conference in which he presented a RM2,000 award to violin world champion Imran Azim Iskandar. He mentioned that the response to the Singapore-Sibu-Singapore route has been positive, as indicated by AirAsia records. The passenger load for the route varied from a low of 62.35% in March to a high of 72.58% in December 2022.
In addition to his success in the violin world championship, Imran, a Form 5 student from SMK Bukit Assek, also won silver medals in the contemporary and original works categories, as well as bronze medals in the jazz and open categories at the World Championship of Performing Arts (WCOPA) in the United States. The competition attracted participants from approximately 70 countries.
