SAN FRANCISCO: Airbnb announced on March 11 that it will no longer allow indoor security cameras in guest homes in order to prioritize privacy.

Previously, Airbnb permitted indoor security cameras in common areas like hallways and living rooms as long as they were visible and disclosed in listings before bookings were made. However, there have been complaints on social media about guests finding hidden cameras in Airbnb rentals, particularly in private areas.

In a blog post, the company based in San Francisco stated, “Airbnb is banning the use of indoor security cameras in listings globally as part of efforts to simplify our policy on security cameras and other devices and to continue to prioritize the privacy of our community.”

The updated policy, which also includes stricter rules regarding outdoor security cameras at Airbnb properties, will be implemented on April 30.

Juniper Downs, head of community policy and partnerships at Airbnb, explained in an online post, “Our goal was to create new, clear rules that provide our community with greater clarity about what to expect on Airbnb.”

Despite the ban on indoor security cameras, Airbnb will still allow hosts to use doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors for home security purposes and to detect unauthorized parties.

According to the company, hosts will be required to disclose the locations of any outdoor security cameras, which are not allowed to monitor areas like outdoor showers or saunas.

The decision to ban indoor security cameras in Airbnb rentals reflects the company’s commitment to protecting the privacy of its users and ensuring a safe and secure experience for all guests.

Airbnb’s updated policy aims to provide clear guidelines for hosts and guests regarding the use of security devices in rental properties, while still allowing for necessary security measures such as doorbell cameras and noise monitors.
