The Australian Defence Ministry has confirmed that an aircraft incident involving U.S. military personnel took place on Sunday morning during an exercise in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Sky News Australia has reported that a v-22 Osprey helicopter carrying around 20 U.S. Marines crashed off the coast of Darwin, prompting a search and rescue operation.

The ministry stated in an email that initial reports indicate the incident only involves U.S. defense personnel, with no involvement from Australian Defence Force members.

The incident occurred on Melville Island, located north of Darwin, during Exercise Predator’s Run 2023.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office has announced that he had a previously scheduled press conference at 0520 GMT.

Shivani Tanna reported from Bengaluru and Sam McKeith reported from Sydney. William Mallard conducted the editing of this article.
