With her 89th World Cup victory, Mikaela Shiffrin secured a win in the women’s slalom in Levi. Her rival Petra Vlhova from Slovakia, unfortunately, straddled a gate on the second run and was unable to finish. This victory marked Shiffrin’s 139th podium place, inching her closer to Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 155 podiums in the men’s events.
Vlhova had a lead of almost one second after the first run and continued to extend her advantage at the top of the second run, but her unfortunate mistake cost her the victory. Shiffrin finished with a time of one minute 51.68 seconds, 0.18 seconds ahead of Leona Popovic from Croatia. Lena Duerr from Germany ended in third place, 0.30 seconds behind Shiffrin.
In her post-race remarks, Shiffrin admitted, “I was sort of settled on second place.” She also praised Vlhova, saying, “Petra really did a masterclass in slalom skiing this weekend; in my mind she earned this victory and I’m quite lucky to have it.”
Meanwhile, the men’s downhill race in Zermatt-Cervinia, on the border between Switzerland and Italy, was canceled for the second day in a row due to heavy snowfall and winds.
