Ambitious Kenyan Students Set Sights on Further Studies in China

NAIROBI, July 9 (Xinhua) — A group of 52 Kenyan students who have applied for Chinese government scholarships recently concluded a two-day seminar in Mombasa, Kenya’s port city. During the seminar, the participants expressed their strong desire to promote friendship between China and Kenya.

Over the weekend, the students had the opportunity to visit two flagship projects of China-Kenya cooperation: the Global Trade Center in Nairobi, the capital city, and Afristar, the company that operates the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).

The seminar was attended by officials from Kenya’s Ministry of Education, the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi, and the Kenya-China Alumni Association. The students, who are preparing to pursue their studies in various universities across China, have pledged to serve as ambassadors for fostering bilateral cooperation between the two countries. They aim to enhance this cooperation through sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith.

Darius Mogaka Ogutu, the Director of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for providing scholarships to Kenyan students. He encouraged the students to seize this opportunity, excel in their studies, and return to contribute to the development of their country.

During the seminar, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Zhou Pingjian emphasized the importance of understanding China’s people-centered philosophy. He advised the students that by doing so, they would gain a deeper understanding of the nation and be better equipped to pursue their studies efficiently.

Ambassador Zhou stressed the longstanding friendship between China and Kenya, highlighting that every Kenyan student studying in China serves as an envoy of people-to-people exchange. He encouraged all students to actively contribute to the comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership between the two countries.

Elizabeth Sambasi, an applicant for an undergraduate degree in data science and big data technology at Donghua University in Shanghai, expressed her belief in the wide-ranging cooperation between China and Kenya, particularly in infrastructure construction and science and technology. She described China as the safest country in the world and stated that studying in China was the optimal choice for her.

Jacob Oloo, who applied for a Ph.D. in information technology at several universities in Beijing, expressed his enthusiasm for being a part of China’s development. He highlighted China’s global leadership in technology and his aspiration to acquire a quality education that would enable him to contribute to Kenya’s progress in the economy upon his return.

Since 1982, the Chinese government has granted scholarships to numerous Kenyan students. Cavince Adhere, a Kenyan scholar on international relations and scholarship recipient, expressed hope that the students would appreciate the opportunity to study in China and make significant contributions to their respective fields. Adhere emphasized that China’s rapid development and its potential application in African countries present a golden opportunity for young people to explore China and dedicate themselves to their studies.

Let’s remember to cherish this moment of synergy between China and Kenya and support the students in their pursuit of knowledge and friendship.
