Bersatu youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal is calling for an amendment to the Federal Constitution that would limit the qualification for Malaysia’s Prime Minister to only a Malay Muslim.
According to Wan Ahmad, this amendment could potentially restore Malay support for the government.
“My proposal to Anwar is that this is the best time, with a two-thirds majority, to amend the Constitution so that only a Malay Muslim can be the Malaysian Prime Minister,” he said in a statement on Facebook on Thursday (Dec 14).
Wan Ahmad believes that this proposed amendment could address the current challenges faced by the unity government, suggesting that it may be more effective than symbolic gestures such as wearing traditional sandals, singing, kissing the keris, or speaking Bahasa.
He also expressed concern over DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang’s assertion that the Federal Constitution does not prohibit non-Malays from becoming the prime minister, which has reportedly caused anxiety among the majority Malay population.
Wan Ahmad argued that Lim’s remarks conflict with the principles that were foundational to the formation of the Federation of Malaysia, which were based on respect for the social contract, the will of the Malay rulers, and the “unwritten consensus” among other factors.
Lim Kit Siang made the controversial comments during a meeting with Malaysian students in Manchester, United Kingdom, last month. He has since given a statement to the police and is under investigation following reports lodged against his remarks on Dec 13.
