LUANDA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) — President of Angola Joao Lourenco has inspected a dam currently being constructed by Chinese company Sinohydro. The completion of this project is expected to alleviate water scarcity in the country’s southern region.
Lourenco expressed his satisfaction with the professionalism and operational efficiency displayed by the Chinese company during his visit to the construction site, according to a statement from Sinohydro.
The Ndue Dam project is situated approximately 170 km from Ondjiva, the capital of Cunene province. Once finished in 2024, the dam will supply water to approximately 55,000 local residents, ensure a reliable water source for 60,000 heads of livestock, and facilitate the annual irrigation of 9,200 hectares of land.
The dam, with a storage capacity of 170 million cubic meters of water, is of significant importance to Angola. Narciso Ambrosio, the general director of the National Institute of Water Resources, who accompanied the president during the visit to the construction site on Friday, stated that the dam will adequately meet the needs of local populations and livestock. Furthermore, it will notably enhance the overall quality of life in the local communities.
According to the statement released by Sinohydro, the Ndue Dam will effectively address the ongoing issue of water scarcity in the region.
