PETALING JAYA: Zahari Kechik, the Jeli MP from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), has announced his support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, becoming the fourth Bersatu elected representative to do so within a short period.
In a statement on Wednesday, Zahari stated that he is switching his support from the Perikatan Nasional-led Opposition to the Madani government to promote the development and progress of his Parliamentary constituency.
“I realize that the people must be prioritized and development must continue without compromise in these challenging times. As an MP, I have to serve the people of Jeli to the best of my ability,” he said.
“Nevertheless, I will remain loyal and continue as a member of Bersatu. I am prepared to face the risks and disciplinary action to ensure the voters of Jeli do not become victims of the situation. The people of Jeli should not be left behind,” Zahari added in his statement.
He also stated that his support for Anwar will continue until the next general election and that his change of allegiance was not due to any duress or pressure from anyone.
The support for Anwar from Bersatu members has been growing, with Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim being the third MP from Bersatu to declare his support for the unity government led by Anwar on Tuesday.
Furthermore, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid expressed support for Anwar, citing the desire for additional allocation for his constituency.
Following them, Labuan MP Datuk Dr Suhaili Abdul Rahman also declared support for Anwar, leading to their suspension from the party by the party’s disciplinary board.
