BRASILIA (Reuters) – A residential building collapse in northeastern Brazil has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, according to civil defense officials. The last missing individuals were discovered lifeless, delivering a devastating blow to the community.
The incident occurred on Friday in the Janga neighborhood, located on the outskirts of Recife, the capital of the northeastern state of Pernambuco. As heavy rains battered the region, the apartment building succumbed to the forces of the elements, catching many residents unaware as they slept peacefully.
While the exact cause of the collapse remains uncertain, civil defense reports confirm that three individuals miraculously survived this horrific event. Initially, authorities had already confirmed eight casualties on Friday.
Expressing her condolences on Twitter, Governor Raquel Lyra of Pernambuco assured the affected families that the state government would spare no effort in providing necessary assistance during this painful time.
Recife, a bustling coastal city boasting a population of approximately 1.5 million residents, has been grappling with relentless heavy rainfall in recent days, exacerbating these tragic incidents.
