Argentina’s farmers, known for their significant production of soy, corn, wheat, and beef, hold negative views towards the country’s polarized presidential election finalists, considering them untrustworthy and unreliable.

The first round general vote in Argentina took place on Sunday, with Peronist Economy Minister Sergio Massa emerging as the winner, surpassing radical libertarian Javier Milei. These two candidates present starkly different models for the struggling country, leading up to a run-off on November 19. Business-friendly contender Patricia Bullrich has dropped out.

Despite some discussions about potential reductions in grains export taxes, a major demand of farmers, they have little confidence in Massa or the government, according to Horacio Deciancio, a farmer from San Vicente in the Buenos Aires province. Deciancio stated, “We have a total distrust of him.”

The economy of Argentina is currently facing its worst crisis in 20 years, with negative reserves and triple-digit inflation. Massa, who lacks previous government experience, is in charge of the economy during this challenging period. Meanwhile, Milei, an outsider, is proposing a radical plan for the country’s political and economic status quo, which he refers to as a “chainsaw” approach.

Deciancio also highlighted concerns about Milei, mentioning his lack of management experience and unpredictable character, making him an “unknown” entity despite his promises to deregulate the economy and reduce taxes.

Sara Gardiol, the president of the Confederation of Rural Associations in the province of Santa Fe, expressed skepticism towards the statements made by both candidates, considering them mere empty words. She emphasized the need for concrete actions, stating, “I don’t see anything concrete or clear in either of them.”

However, Carlos Achetoni, the president of the Argentine Agrarian Federation (FAA), offered a more optimistic perspective. Despite the complex economic environment, which has been further exacerbated by a recent drought that severely impacted harvests, Achetoni sees this moment as a potential opportunity. He stated, “It is a very difficult moment for Argentina, but critical situations can also provide opportunities.”

Achetoni hopes that this opportunity will allow for a recalibration of the situation, meaningful dialogue with different stakeholders, and the implementation of clear and concrete measures.
