Armenia has requested assistance from the European Union (EU) in dealing with the influx of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh following Azerbaijan’s recent takeover of the region, as stated by the office of Italy’s prime minister on Saturday.
Nagorno-Karabakh, though internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, is predominantly populated by Armenian Christians who established the self-declared Republic of Artsakh three decades ago after a violent ethnic conflict during the collapse of the Soviet Union.
The head of the United Nations’ refugee agency (UNHCR) reported on Friday that over 100,000 refugees have arrived in Armenia since Azerbaijan initiated its military operation to regain control of Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Italian prime minister’s office disclosed in a statement that Armenia has appealed to the EU for temporary shelters and medical supplies, while mentioning Rome’s efforts to promote stability in the region.
