Russian Daniil Medvedev, the top seed at the Erste Bank Open, defeated Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-4, 6-2 in the first round, joining five other players who also achieved sweeps in their matches on Wednesday. Despite Fils taking a 3-2 lead in the first set, Medvedev dominated the rest of the match. He won an impressive 28 out of 31 first-service points and managed to hit 16 winners with only three unforced errors.
Italian Jannik Sinner, the second seed, Croatian wild-card entrant Borna Gojo, and France’s Gael Monfils, who is playing on a protected ranking, all blanked their respective opponents in the first round. Sinner defeated American Ben Shelton 7-6 (2), 7-5, Gojo ousted Russia’s Aslan Karatsev 6-3, 6-3, and Monfils downed Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 6-4.
In the second round, Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the fifth seed, defeated Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie 6-2, 6-4, while Russia’s Karen Khachanov, the eighth seed, emerged victorious against the Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka.
In the Swiss Indoors Basel tournament, Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry made a remarkable comeback against Andy Murray from Great Britain in the second round, winning 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-2. Etcheverry had a strong first serve, connecting on 71 percent of his attempts, and successfully saved five out of six break points. Murray struggled to recover after losing his serve in the third set.
Poland’s Hurbert Hurkacz, the fourth seed, also advanced to the third round with a straightforward victory over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Among the other first-round matches, Norway’s Casper Ruud, the second seed, American Taylor Fritz, the third seed, Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, the sixth seed, and France’s Ugo Humbert all emerged as winners.
