DUBAI (Reuters) – An attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz has resulted in the death of at least one person, according to a local official speaking to state TV. The official also stated that one suspect has been apprehended. Earlier, Iranian state media reported that the attack had claimed the lives of at least four individuals.

The governor of Fars province, Mohammad Hadi Imaniyeh, provided further details about the incident, explaining that it occurred at around 19:00 local time (15:30 GMT) when an armed terrorist entered the shrine area and began shooting. The perpetrator was later arrested. Imaniyeh confirmed that one person was killed in the attack.

As a result of the violence, seven people sustained injuries, including two shrine workers and two pilgrims. Shops in the vicinity of the shrine were closed, and security forces cordoned off the area, as stated by state TV.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the Shah Cheragh shrine. However, the state news agency IRNA reported that the assault was carried out by terrorists. In October of the previous year, Islamic State had claimed responsibility for an attack on the same shrine, resulting in 15 fatalities.

The terrorist group has previously carried out attacks in Iran, notably the twin bombings in 2017 targeting Iran’s parliament and the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic.

Videos shared on Iranian state media depicted worshippers in a state of panic, desperately searching for their loved ones amidst the chaos. Bloodied clothing could also be seen in the aftermath of the attack.
