Australia’s southern island state of Tasmania seemed to be on track for a minority government as vote counting continued following an election on Saturday. The conservative Liberal government, led by Premier Jeremy Rockliff, was expected to win the most seats in the new parliament but would likely fall short of a majority, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

The election was triggered after defections from Rockliff’s party caused the only Liberal government in power in Australia’s six states and two self-governing territories to fall into a minority position. Rockliff claimed victory late Saturday, but opposition leader Rebecca White from the centre-left Labor party stated that the outcome was still uncertain.

White expressed that it could be a “long few weeks until we know the exact makeup of the next parliament,” indicating a period of uncertainty in Tasmania’s political landscape. Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles noted on Sunday that the Liberals had encountered a 12% swing against them in the election and emphasized that the federal Labor government would collaborate with whomever forms the government in Tasmania.

Tasmania is geographically isolated, located a one-hour flight or a 10-hour ferry ride from the mainland city of Melbourne, approximately 445 km (275 miles) away. Nearly forty percent of the island consists of wilderness or protected areas, adding to its unique environmental appeal.

Tasmania stands out as the only Australian state that employs proportional representation to elect its lower house, contributing to a legacy of minority governments in its political history. The dynamic of coalition-building and negotiation is prevalent in Tasmania’s political landscape, reflecting the diverse opinions and priorities of its citizens.
