Police in Berlin have announced that an autopsy will be conducted to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the death of a 24-year-old Mexican woman. The woman, Maria Fernanda Sanchez, went missing at the end of July and her body was discovered on Saturday.
A passerby walking along a bridge in the Adlershof neighborhood found Sanchez’s body floating in a canal. Interpol had issued a search notice for her. A police spokesperson stated, “A death investigation has been launched. The cause of the death will be clarified in the course of an autopsy.” The autopsy is expected to take place within the next few days.
The spokesperson emphasized that, so far, no evidence of external influence on her death has been established. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico has expressed his concern for Sanchez’s case. He stated that he would request assistance from the German President to aid in the search for Sanchez. According to Mexican media reports, Sanchez was a masters student in Germany.
Sanchez’s family released a statement, confirming her death and expressing their gratitude for the support they have received. The statement read, “It is with great pain that we inform you that today, August 5th, the German police confirmed that our daughter María Fernanda was found dead. We appreciate the support and solidarity. We ask for respect for our daughter’s memory, our mourning, and our privacy. We appreciate your discretion and understanding.”
A few days after Sanchez’s disappearance, Berlin police had stated that there were indications that she was in an exceptional psychological situation.
