MELAKA: A battery-powered street sweeping robot has been introduced in the tourist area of Bandar Hilir in preparation for Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM 2024).
SWM Environment Sdn Bhd’s corporate affairs general manager, Mohd Norlisam Mohd Nordin, stated that the robot has the ability to navigate and avoid obstacles encountered during its cleaning routes.
“The robot itself is an attraction for tourists and can effectively maintain the cleanliness of the streets in Bandar Hilir,” he said during the robot’s inauguration on Saturday (Oct 28).
He mentioned that the robot will be in operation every Saturday from 6pm to midnight as part of the car-free zone initiative.
“The robot will either be controlled by an operator or through a remote control device,” he added.
Mohd Norlisam revealed that the battery can last for up to eight hours and the robot has the capacity to collect large amounts of trash in a single day.
He also mentioned that the robot can travel at a speed of two to three kilometers per hour and cover a wide area within an hour of operation.
“For safety reasons, there is a beacon to alert pedestrians when the robot is in operation,” he added.
Mohd Norlisam explained that the robot is designed with a strong suction power to effectively collect all types of trash along its cleaning routes.
The Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, along with other state officials, had the opportunity to witness the robot’s operation during a communal clean-up event on October 15.
