In a new book published in Spain on Tuesday, Pope Francis revealed that his predecessor, Benedict XVI, supported his stance on civil partnerships for same-sex couples. Despite the Catholic Church’s opposition to same-sex marriages, Francis has consistently expressed that same-sex couples should be protected by civil union laws. This marks a departure from the more conservative views of Benedict, who had previously not shown sympathy towards the LGBT community.

Francis shared that Benedict defended him to a group of cardinals who accused him of endorsing same-sex marriage, clarifying that what Francis had advocated for was not considered heresy according to Benedict. This revelation was made in the book “Pope Francis. The Successor: My memories of Benedict XVI”, based on interviews with journalist Javier Martinez-Brocal.

Back in February 2023, Pope Francis mentioned that Benedict had dismissed a complaint regarding his comments on civil unions, although fewer details were provided at the time. In December, Francis made headlines by permitting priests to bless same-sex couples, which triggered backlash from conservative circles. He clarified that this action did not signify formal approval of non-heterosexual relationships. There is no indication that Francis consulted with Benedict about this decision, as the latter continued residing in the Vatican until his passing in late 2022.

Within the book, Francis refuted claims of any personal discord with Benedict during their coexistence in what was dubbed the “two popes” era. He did, however, acknowledge experiencing challenges with Benedict’s secretary, Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, who released a critical book about Francis shortly after Benedict’s funeral. Francis expressed disappointment over the timing and content of the book, deeming it to contain inaccuracies.

Addressing his own mortality, the 87-year-old Pope discussed his funeral arrangements, revealing plans to simplify burial rites for himself and his successors. He announced that deceased popes will no longer lie in state before being placed in a coffin, a departure from the tradition observed for previous pontiffs, including Benedict. Despite his declining health, Francis remains committed to implementing these changes.

Overall, the book sheds light on the camaraderie between Pope Francis and Benedict XVI, showcasing moments of support and understanding between the two pontiffs. This narrative emphasizes the evolution of perspectives within the Catholic Church towards the LGBT community, with Francis at the forefront of promoting inclusivity and compassion.
