The International Green Week, a prominent trade fair for food, agriculture, and horticulture, commenced in Berlin, Germany on Friday amid protests by farmers against anticipated subsidy cuts.
The exhibition grounds were disrupted by hundreds of tractors and trucks due to the protests, which began at the end of last year. The German government’s initial concessions to eliminate some of the cuts did not appease the farmers.
German Minister of Agriculture Cem Oezdemir, a key figure in the government’s efforts to pacify the farmers, expressed gratitude to the farmers at the opening of the Green Week, acknowledging their role in ensuring that tables are set daily.
The Green Week will continue until Jan. 28 and is known as “a showcase for German agriculture and the food industry” in the country, according to Oezdemir, who also emphasized its importance as “a window to the world.”
Organizers stated that approximately 1,400 exhibitors from 60 countries and regions will educate visitors about modern agriculture, the food industry, culinary trends, and sustainable topics.
In conjunction with the Green Week, the 16th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture in Germany will host a multitude of events focused on the theme of “Food Systems for Our Future: Joining Forces for a Zero Hunger World,” as announced by Germany’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The Berlin Agriculture Ministers’ Conference, which will take place on Saturday, will bring together approximately 70 agricultural ministers from around the world, as well as representatives from international organizations.
