KUALA LUMPUR: Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has instructed the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) to expedite the distribution of funds to the family of the late journalist and Kajai Award winner, Wan Noor Hayati Wan Alias (pic), through Tabung Kasih@Hawana 2023.
Expressing his deep sadness over the passing of Wan Noor Hayati, also known as Wanti, Fahmi emphasized that the well-being of media practitioners is his top priority.
“Last week, during a post-Cabinet meeting, I urged Bernama to hold immediate discussions with the Finance Ministry to ensure that the RM1 million fund, announced by the Prime Minister at the National Journalists’ Day 2023 (Hawana) in May, can be allocated as Bernama’s welfare fund,” Fahmi shared with Bernama after appearing on Ruang Bicara, a Bernama TV production, on Monday (July 10) night.
The Tabung Kasih@Hawana initiative, spearheaded by the Communications and Digital Ministry and implemented through Bernama, aims to provide ongoing assistance to the media community facing difficulties and life challenges.
Earlier today, it was reported that Wan Noor Hayati, aged 44, has passed away at Serdang Hospital at approximately 6.10pm. She suffered from heart failure after battling pneumonia.
Besides her tenure at Utusan Malaysia, Wan Noor Hayati was a former reporter for Berita Harian and Media Variasi. In recognition of her exceptional work in national journalism, she was awarded the prestigious Kajai Award by the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) in 2013.
The late journalist leaves behind a nine-year-old son and was a dedicated single mother.
