PETALING JAYA: The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih) is seeking public support to raise RM60,000 to bolster their efforts in monitoring the upcoming state elections.
Bersih, the electoral watchdog, has outlined key programs and activities that require funding. This includes mobilizing 89 Election Observers to monitor election offenses and hate speech at 61 hot seats.
“Although our observers are volunteers and do not receive any remuneration, Bersih will cover their travel and food expenses,” stated the Bersih steering committee on Tuesday (July 11).
Additionally, Bersih plans to combat misinformation by updating the pemantau.org website, which serves as a platform for reporting election offenses and related issues.
“We will also establish a call center to provide voter education, addressing inquiries about voter registration, postal votes, voting centers, and more,” added the steering committee.
Bersih is launching a campaign called #VoteLokal to encourage a higher voter turnout and persuade voters residing in other states to return and cast their ballots.
“A high voter turnout is essential for democracy. It adds legitimacy to the election results and new state governments,” emphasized Bersih.
Bersih welcomes donations of any amount as it enables them to monitor the state polls and empower voters to exercise their democratic rights.
“Every donated ringgit will be accounted for. A report will be published at the conclusion of the state polls,” assured the steering committee.
The state elections in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Terengganu, and Kelantan are scheduled for August 12, with early polling on August 8. Nomination day is July 29.
