President Joe Biden discussed the possibility of shutting down the U.S.’s southern border with Mexico to migrants in an interview aired on Tuesday. He mentioned that his administration is exploring whether he has the authority to take such action independently.
Biden explained to Univision that a bipartisan legislation that would have given him the power to close the border was blocked by Republicans in Congress. As a result, he is considering the option of pursuing this decision on his own. However, he acknowledged that there is uncertainty regarding his authority without the support of legislation.
The issue of migration has become a key topic in the upcoming presidential election. Former President Donald Trump, who is expected to be Biden’s opponent in the November 5th election, has criticized Biden’s handling of border-related matters.
