Authorities in Ipoh have successfully captured a black panther near Felda Lasah in Sungai Siput.
Teh Kok Lim, the Perak environment committee chairman, revealed that the animal, believed to be a female and around four years old, was caught in a trap on Saturday (feb 3) morning.
“The trap had been set up by the state Department of Wildlife Protection and National Parks (Perhilitan) since Nov 20 last year in response to complaints about wild animal attacks on cattle in the area,” Teh explained.
He also noted, “The panther appears to be healthy overall, but it has suffered some injuries to the head, likely sustained as it crashed into the trap during its capture.”
Teh further stated, “It is believed that the panther weighs approximately 30kg.”
Additionally, Teh mentioned that the National Wildlife Rescue Centre had been notified about the captured feline’s situation.
“Perhilitan has recommended releasing the animal in the Gerik Forest Reserves if there is no compelling reason to keep the animal in captivity,” Teh added.
He concluded, “Continued efforts are being planned and will be carried out to ensure the safety of the local residents.”
