Malaysia’s Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is warning the public to be cautious during leisure activities along riverbanks, especially during the current north-east monsoon season.
Andy Alie, the fire chief of Sarawak JBPM Sibu Zone, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant to any changes in river conditions to avoid potential water surges.
He listed some early signs of a water surge as including a rapid increase in water levels, changes in the color of the water, stronger currents, and the presence of floating debris on the water’s surface.
If these signs are observed, immediate safety measures should be taken, such as relocating to a safer area and contacting the fire department for assistance.
“I advise the public to be cautious during recreational activities, particularly during this North-east Monsoon season,” Andy told Bernama.
He also stressed the importance of keeping informed about the weather conditions and ensuring that campsites are set up at a safe distance from the riverside.
Andy mentioned an incident involving nine families from Bintulu who were camping along Sungai Yong in Kapit and were caught in a water surge on Sunday (Feb 11).
He also recommended that individuals planning camping or recreational activities in river areas or non-public recreation locations inform the nearest police station as a safety measure. – Bernama
