BRASILIA: Brazilian authorities have confirmed that they are investigating a federal judge for errors made in a ruling that was generated using artificial intelligence. They stated that this is the first case of its kind in the country.
The National Justice Council (CNJ), which oversees the courts, has called upon Judge Jefferson Rodrigues to explain how he came to publish a decision that was filled with legal mistakes formulated by the online AI tool, ChatGPT.
Rodrigues, who is a judge in the northern state of Acre, included incorrect details about previous court cases and legal precedents in his ruling, incorrectly attributing past decisions to the Superior Court of Justice, according to case records seen by AFP.
The judge claimed that the ruling was written by a “trusted advisor”, with assistance from AI, in documents filed with the oversight body. He referred to the situation as a “mere mistake”, blaming it on “the work overload facing judges”.
“We believe this is the first case of its kind in Brazil,” the CNJ said, giving Rodrigues 15 days to provide further explanation.
The CNJ reported that an increasing number of judges in Brazil are relying on AI, as the country currently has no laws regulating its use. – AFP
