Trinidad and Tobago is contemplating the possibility of declaring an international emergency in light of an oil spill that has left miles of its shores tainted and poses a threat of spreading to neighboring Caribbean countries, Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced on Friday.
Rowley stated in an address to the nation’s parliament that Brazil and Venezuela have offered their assistance in containing and cleaning up the oil leakage from a vessel that sank off the coast of Tobago last week.
He also mentioned that Trinidad and Tobago is considering declaring a Tier 3 emergency, which would enable the country to seek foreign aid. The ownership of the vessel responsible for the spill has yet to be determined, and it is reported that it spilled thousands of barrels of oil.
