The Sirio-Libanes Hospital in Brazil’s capital announced that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is in stable condition after undergoing hip surgery and is already able to walk in physiotherapy sessions. The surgery was performed to address arthrosis of his right hip, which is caused by the painful deterioration of the cartilage on the femur’s head. According to his doctors, Lula is expected to stay in the hospital until Tuesday and will then move to the presidential residence, where he will continue to govern for the next three weeks as he recovers.
The arthroplasty procedure, conducted under general anesthesia, involved the removal of the femur’s head and the insertion of a prosthetic joint. Giancarlo Polesello, the orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery, explained that Lula will need to avoid prolonged standing and rely on a walker during the initial weeks as the procedure affects his balance.
Despite enduring constant pain for over a year, Lula’s condition has not hindered him from traveling extensively during his presidency. However, he will not resume international trips until the end of November. At that time, Lula plans to attend the COP28 global climate meeting in the United Arab Emirates.
