The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced on Monday that two of the four individuals who went missing after severe floods hit Nova Scotia, Canada’s Atlantic province, are likely dead. During a televised news conference, RCMP spokesman Sergeant Rob Frizzell revealed that a 52-year-old man, who had been reported missing after his car was submerged, was found dead. Authorities also discovered human remains in a separate location, leading them to believe that another missing person had perished. However, they couldn’t confirm the identity of the human remains at that point.

Speaking at the news conference, provincial premier Tim Houston expressed his grief: “It’s a heartbreaking day for our province.” The four individuals went missing in Halifax, the largest city in Nova Scotia.

The storm began on Friday and brought forth heavy rainfall, resulting in some areas receiving over 25 cm (10 inches) of precipitation within 24 hours – a volume equivalent to what typically falls in three months. The floods caused roads to be washed away, buildings to be submerged, and bridges to sustain damage. Additionally, a Canadian National Railway track used to access the port of Halifax, Canada’s fourth-largest port, was affected.

“Crews have managed to restore much of the damaged infrastructure, but certain repairs will be delayed until the floodwaters recede,” stated Canadian National Railway company spokesman Scott Brown via email. The Halifax municipal authority also announced that some of the damage will require weeks to be fully repaired.

The tragic incident serves as a devastating reminder of the destructive power of natural disasters and the significant impact they can have on communities. As the recovery efforts continue, authorities will strive to provide support to those affected and work towards rebuilding the affected areas.
