MELAKA: About 2,000 participants are set to join a 208km relay run organised by the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NSCM) to celebrate survivors and remember those lost to cancer.
NSCM’s Managing Director, Associate Professor Dr M. Murallitharan, said the inaugural “Cancer Freedom Torch Relay” on Aug 24 and Aug 25 will cover the distance from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka.
“The event will witness 20 cancer survivors running alongside 2,000 other participants, carrying the torch across Kuala Lumpur, Negri Sembilan, and Melaka.
“The relay will kick off at 7am on Aug 24 at Titiwangsa Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur and end at 7pm in Seremban, covering 46 checkpoints during the first leg,” he said on Wednesday (Aug 14).
Dr Murallitharan said the second leg will see participants continue the torch relay for another 98km from Seremban to Melaka before concluding the event at Manipal University College here.
He noted that each participant will run between one and seven kilometres through rural areas, towns, and cities, providing opportunities for the public to join this meaningful event.
“Throughout the relay, participants will distribute cancer awareness and care pamphlets.
“This aligns with the global Relay for Life (RFL) mission to unite communities in celebrating cancer fighters and symbolising hope and solidarity in the battle against cancer,” he said.
Those interested in joining the torch relay can register for free via the website relayforlifemalaysia.com or contact 016-528 3799.
Through the website, individuals can select specific checkpoints to participate in and carry the torch before passing it to the next bearer at designated meeting points until the event ends here.
