A car sank into the Straits of Malacca in Melaka after the driver fell asleep and forgot to engage the handbrake, resulting in the vehicle being swept away by high tide. Melaka Tengah OCPD Christopher Patit stated that the 38-year-old foreign driver only realized he was in the middle of the sea when he woke up at 5am on Saturday (Oct 28). The driver had parked his car at the beachfront of Klebang, and proceeded to doze off before the high tide claimed his vehicle. Fortunately, the driver managed to escape the sinking car unharmed.
Additionally, the driver, who manages a grocery store, explained that he did not have the funds to hire a tow truck to retrieve his vehicle from the sea. Authorities confirmed that the foreigner owned the car and possessed a valid driver’s license as well as all necessary documents to reside in the country. The Melaka Historic City Council successfully towed the vehicle out of the water.
