On Tuesday at the Australian Open in Melbourne, Norwegian Casper Ruud, who was seeded 11th, defeated Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 in the intense heat.
Ruud took just over two hours to beat Ramos-Vinolas, who only managed two aces compared to Ruud’s 11. Ruud saved all four break points and won 34 of 41 first-service points.
Ruud expressed that the Australian Open is his favorite of the Grand Slams and stressed the importance of a quick start in the oppressive heat. He also mentioned that although the conditions were challenging, the atmosphere and fans make it all worth it.
Other seeded players who won their matches on Tuesday include No. 19 Cameron Norrie of Great Britain and 32nd-seeded Czech Jiri Lehecka. Norrie defeated Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, while Lehecka beat Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
Lehecka finished with 33 winners, and Norrie tallied 30 in their respective matches. Dutch player Tallon Griekspoor, seeded 28th, staged a comeback to defeat Russia’s Roman Safiullin in a match that lasted nearly four hours.
American Alex Michelsen eliminated Australian wildcard James McCabe with a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory. French wild cards Arthur Cazaux and Arthur Fils also emerged victorious, along with qualifier Giulio Zeppieri.
