The China-constructed Abu Qir Marine Port Container Terminal in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria has officially begun its operations, as reported on Jan. 10 by Xinhua. On Tuesday morning, the Chinese cargo ship “Zhong Gu Ji Lin” loaded with 2,000 standard containers docked at the completed section of the terminal to mark the official opening.
The China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has been responsible for the construction of the terminal since March 2021. According to Duan Kun, the head of CHEC Egypt, the first phase of construction was completed in October 2023, and the project is now in its second phase. The overall construction includes the port, dredging, reclamation, channel improvement, revetment, and supporting facilities building.
Notably, the project has already generated over 2,000 jobs for the local labor market. Once fully built, the terminal will be capable of handling 2 million standard containers each year.
