Alphabet Inc CEO Sundar Pichai expressed his anticipation for China to lead in the field of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of the US collaborating with China on both regulation and innovation in this area.
Pichai made these remarks during an interview by Bloomberg’s Emily Chang at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco. He highlighted the remarkable scale of AI work in China and stated, “In some ways, China is going to be at the forefront of AI and that’s a given.”
He also stressed the necessity for a strong working relationship, stating, “No way you make progress over the long term without China and the US deeply talking to each other on something like AI.” This aligns with his experience at Google, where he prioritized the technology.
This week, executives from Microsoft Corp, Citigroup Inc, Tesla Inc, and other major multinational corporations are meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Asian leaders, as well as US President Joe Biden.
Pichai compared the need for global collaboration on AI safety to the urgency of working together on climate change, noting that if something goes wrong with AI technology in one country, it has implications for everyone on the Internet.
During the interview, Pichai also discussed Google’s upcoming project, Gemini, a large language model that has been trained on massive data sets and will be competitive with other advanced models in providing natural language responses. He indicated that the company’s current focus is on releasing the initial version of Gemini as soon as possible, followed by more complex versions.
“I am extraordinarily excited for innovation coming ahead,” he said, expressing his enthusiasm for the future. “We built the company for this moment.” – Bloomberg
