CHENGDU, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — China has emerged as the winner in the women’s volleyball gold medal match at the Chengdu Universiade, defeating Japan with scores of 29-27, 29-27, and 25-22 on Sunday.
China initially took the lead, with a five-point advantage in the opening minutes. However, Japan quickly caught up and managed to save five set points. It was Wang Wenhan’s winning strike that ultimately helped China secure the first set.
The second set was highly competitive, with Japan even having the first set point. However, China managed to prevail and secured a 2-0 lead.
Throughout the third set, China maintained a slight advantage. Zhong Hui delivered the championship-winning spike, and Japan’s serving error sealed the victory for China.
Wu Mengjie led the Chinese team with 16 points, while Zhong Hui and Zhou Yuetong contributed with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Ameze Miyabe and Yoshino Sato were the top scorers for Japan, both with 16 points.
“China displayed impressive skills and their height advantage was notable. We have great admiration for them and will learn from this experience. Both teams showcased a thrilling and closely contested match,” said Japan coach Masahiro Fujii.
“The match was outstanding, and we successfully achieved our goal. Our players deserve this win due to their hard work and dedication,” said China coach Zhao Yong.
