Wang Huiqin, a Chinese painter and calligrapher who has lived in Slovenia for 40 years, will be among the 12 artists representing the country at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy next month. The book illustrations created by these artists will be displayed in a special exhibition area at the fair to signify Slovenia’s role as the “guest of honor” for 2022, according to Tina Bilban, the head of the Slovenian section of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY).

Born in Jiangsu Province in 1955, Wang expressed her excitement at being chosen to represent Slovenia at the fair, recognizing it as an acknowledgment of the quality of her work. She views this opportunity as a unique chance to showcase her illustrations to a large audience on an international platform.

Bilban emphasized that Wang was selected for her exceptional talent, originality, and the recognition she has received in Slovenia and abroad. Wang, who teaches calligraphy and Chinese art at Ljubljana University, is dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between Slovenia and China.

At the Bologna fair, Wang will present two books that focus on Slovenians with connections to China. One book revolves around Alma Karlin, a Slovenian writer who embarked on a solo trip around the world, including a visit to China. The other book highlights astronomer Ferdinand Augustin Hallerstein, who settled in China in the 18th century and made significant contributions, such as creating a large astronomical instrument known as an “armillary sphere” at the Beijing Ancient Observatory.

The original armillary sphere is on display in Beijing, while a replica has been permanently installed in Ljubljana. Wang’s books are bilingual, featuring text in both Slovenian and Chinese, emphasizing the cultural exchange between the two nations through art and literature.

Wang has been recognized with several Slovenian awards for her book illustrations in recent years. Her animated film based on Alma Karlin’s story even won the Best Slovenian Short Film award at a local festival in the previous year, showcasing the impact of her work in promoting Slovenian culture through art.
