LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — “Under the Light,” directed by Zhang Yimou, a renowned Chinese filmmaker, has made its limited theatrical debut in North America. CMC Pictures has released the crime suspense film in Mandarin with English subtitles at nearly 100 selected theaters across various North American cities with a significant overseas Chinese population including Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Boston, Dallas, Phoenix, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver.
The movie, featuring a talented cast including Lei Jiayin, Zhang Guoli, and Yu Hewei, revolves around a corruption case involving money laundering, murder, and other criminal activities in which a municipal official partners with a businessman. “Under the Light” topped the Chinese box office during the eight-day Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday, one of China’s most profitable periods for the film industry. In just 23 days, the film has already generated over 1.21 billion yuan (approximately 165 million U.S. dollars) in mainland China, as reported by Maoyan, a Chinese movie-ticketing and film data platform.
The Chinese audience has responded positively to “Under the Light,” awarding it a rating of 9.1 out of 10 on the Maoyan platform. This rating is based on feedback from over 138,000 viewers.
